Fitzroy, Melbourne, faces intense developmental pressures, with large-scale projects overshadowing Federation houses. Revitalising a vacant 150sqm site next to a small garden presents a challenge to traditional planning constraints. From the onset, the clients envisioned a house that addresses the needs of everyday life. Young Street House navigates a balance between the absence of artificial light with the yearning for connection to the environment, space, and privacy.
Though a variety of strategies in bringing natural light into the dwelling, different spatial qualities become apparent as the occupants navigate the house daily. The lack of artificial light becomes less of a constraint and more an opportunity for phenomenology.
